Mushroom
The essence of mushroom…
So this was a great one to work with - the bowl blank had cracks and heavy splaying and woodworm and a growing split. It has been abandoned when it became clear when how far off a potential turned bowl it was.
But the flaws are what make it. There’s no force of intellect or plan or tool which can turn all of that into a bowl. I worked the rough and early blank down from the raw into the piece you see here. And not using a lathe to do it. I used an Arbortech Mini Carver to work it down, with touch and sight as the judge of rightness.
The woodworm was a worry even though it looked long gone.
The stem is layers of birth ply with the curve as a way of ensuring the piece lets you see the inside of the top, all the better to show off its own grain. The cure is not perfect… there is meant to be a kind of collapse in it, an imperfection that accepts the wood has a better chance of winning the battle between my sills and ambition, on the one hand, and the will of the wood on the other.
